The newest Ace Attorney game is somewhat of a departure for the series. You take the role of fan favorite prosecutor Miles Edgeworth and leave the courtroom behind. Instead, you investigate the crime scene, gather leads, and point out discrepancies between how the crime scene should look and how it actually appears. You don't abandon all the courtroom antics, however, as you still cross examine witnesses, press them for more details, and present evidence where a contradiction appears. Instead of a penalty meter, there is a logic bar, but it's function is practically identical.
The writing is as good as I have come to expect from an Ace Attorney game, which is to say, excellent (in spite of a handful of typos). You'll be missing out on a lot of the jokes and references if you haven't played the other four Ace Attorney games. All five cases are part of an overarching story, which is told through both sprite-based characters, larger more detailed figures, and a lot of dialogue.
The music is very good, and if you play without the sound, you will be missing out on some of the more subtle moments in the game.
If you are a fan of the Ace Attorney series, this game is a must. If you've never played the series before, you probably should play the other four before playing this, but the other games are so good, that it's not a bad thing. However, if you don't like to read, this game isn't for you.
